This is an exceptionally mild winter.  The freeze/thaw cycle is creating little rivulets of water trickling through our pastures and the hillside slopes.  The waterways that we’ve introduced, and have left in a natural state, are working beautifully.   The slope to our pond needs work, the horses have overgrazed and in last summer’s excessive heat the cattle were allowed access to the pond and caused some erosion. All of these areas will be addressed this spring.  In the mean time, more projects are in the planning stage.  There are always more projects to be done.

On sunny days the cattle all move around the field following the sun.   The  pavilion where they’re fed is an open shed, with southern exposure, and pasture access.  The outdoor temperature is inconsequential as long as the sun is shining.  Our first calves are due at the end of March.  If this mild weather continues the cattle may be out grazing earlier this year.  That would be a welcome change after the past four winters.
